Preening Macaroni penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus)
Penguins must preen their feathers to ensure maximum waterproofing and insulation.
The Macaroni penguin is the most common penguin species on South Georgia Island with about 2.5 million breeding pairs. It is classified as Vulnerable as the population have dropped more than 50% in the last 40 years. Most of their breeding sites are inaccessible for people. The colony at Cooper Bay is one of the easiest accessible breeding sites on South Georgia Island.
Adult Macaroni penguins averages about 5.5 kg (12 lb) in weight and 70 cm (28 in) in length.
