All-black penguin or penguin dressed in black mud?
I spotted this young black King penguin at Salisbury Plain on South Georgia Islands in January 2008. The Cheesemans Ecology Safaris leaders told me that an all-black penguin was spotted a few earlier at Fortuna Bay, but this bird was clearly a juvenile King penguin - still with brown down on its head. xx
It looks like this teenage king penguin is black, but is it really black or is it just dressed in black mud? I cannot tell - I only saw it for a few seconds before it disappeared in the huge king penguin colony. I got only 3 - and not very good - pictures and they do not give me a clear answer.
